Basalt artist Michael Raaum received the J. Lloyd
Jones Memorial Award and cash prize for his painting, "Entwined
Associations," at the 15th National Art Exhibition at Lincoln Center in
Fort Collins on April 8.
Juror Dean Sobel, project director of the Clyfford
Still Museum in Denver and former director of the Aspen Art Museum,
selected Raaum for the award. The National Art Exhibit features more
than 600 entries from artists across the United States. Sobel selected
109 artists for the exhibition.
"While being a juror might sound like a daunting
task, it is a most enjoyable exercise, as well as a convincing
acknowledgment of how embedded the visual arts are becoming in this
country," said Sobel, in the exhibition catalog.
At the awards ceremony and banquet, Sobel said he
was familiar with Raaum's work and found the large abstract painting to
be "beautifully organic and energetic with its intertwining shapes."
"Entwined Associations" is on display through May 13 at the Lincoln
Center.
